ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carol Grogan

Carol Grogan is the Chief Inspector of Social Services  at HIQA Ireland’s independent regulator for health and social care where she spent a career defined by purpose, precision, and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of others. A nurse by training and a leader by vocation, she was also a passionate traveller, avid reader, keen gardener, and devoted family member whose life, as she wrote it, was vivid and moving forward. In October 2024, a routine mammogram changed everything. Her debut memoir, The Shadow That Walks Beside Me, was born from the journal she kept in the months that followed a small act of defiance she never planned, from a woman who had always imagined she might write a book, but never this one.

The Shadow
That Walks

Beside Me.

A reflective memoir about living with de novo metastatic breast cancer. Raw and deeply personal, it explores what it means to live alongside uncertainty, how identity shifts, relationships deepen, and meaning is reshaped when the future can no longer be assumed.
Through love, faith, and quiet resilience, this unfiltered story reveals the strength found even in life’s darkest moments a testament to hope, humanity, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

"The Shadow That Walks Beside Me"

Living with Uncertainty
Carol’s diagnosis dismantled the future she had assumed was hers. Scan results, biopsy waits, and 3 AM sleeplessness redefined time itself days moved quickly, hours crawled.

Treatment brought no clear destination, only a rolling uncertainty: neutrophil counts, temperature checks, the dread of every scan and what it might reveal. Her world shrank to the space between results.
Identity and Loss of Control
Before her diagnosis, Carol was Chief Inspector, traveller, cook, gardener a woman defined by competence and fierce independence. Metastatic cancer stripped that away.

Her private body became public territory. She could no longer work, trust her body, or make plans. The career she had built over decades became unreachable. She was learning, for the first time, what it meant to need others  and hating it.
The Power of Resilience
Resilience in this book is not triumph it is showing up anyway. It is baking bread at dawn to contain the fear. It is walking Bonnie even when each step is a herculean effort.

It is finding humour in stick-on eyebrows and renaming the family WhatsApp group. Somewhere amid the cascade of side effects, hospitalisations and nights of weeping, Carol found a quiet determination  not to conquer the disease, but to live alongside it.
Connection, Love and Vulnerability
Carol hated relying on others she saw it as failure. Yet it was Lindsay’s steady presence, Niall’s quiet arm around her shoulders, Brian’s weekly flowers Helena’s instinct to simply sit on the bed, and her mother pressing sacred medals into her hands that carried her through.

Her dog Bonnie never left her side. In learning to receive love, Carol discovered something she hadn’t known she needed: the courage to be seen in her brokenness, and the grace to let others in.
